We are delighted to bring you the first of our reviews from Greece….this to compliment our cabin RIB theme, the Apache 22 tested by Joseph Papadopoulos.

The Apache 22 RIB could be described as a new innovation designed by the pen of Greek boat builder Peter Pollatos who, amongst other things, has utilised GRP as well as hypalon for the all important sponsoned section of this particular sportscruiser RIB.

The craft itself is available in two main optional formats, simply put, that means you can plump for the straightforward open version or go the whole hog and shoot for the cabin version you see pictured here. The latter provides a family with the ideal means to enjoy the conveniences of a true weekender, RIB style. With two full berths up forward for Mum and Dad, what could be nicer?

The Apache 22, possesses a deep V hull design of 22 degrees dead-rise which provides the necessary level of comfort in terms of sea keeping that's required of a boat of this type. A craft that is primarily designed for cruising must have a good hull, one that isn't prone to giving a hard ride. This boat I'm happy to say has such a hull, one that is not only very capable at high speeds, but is also efficient and easily maneuverable at low speeds too.

I was impressed by the overall finish of the craft. It really is done to an extremely high standard with much attention given to detail. No ugly areas tucked away or signs of a rushed job here. Cosmetics are even more important when it comes to a leisure RIB. The owner of such a craft wants to feel comfortable with his boat, especially so if it is his enjoyment and may, in addition, be used for entertaining purposes also. Attention to detail also indicates the overall quality of the build of course, and as RIBS are the type of craft which are acquired by people who generally take their boating seriously, breakages or faults are not suffered gladly. The Apache 22 is above all a strong boat, built by a manufacturer who seems to have a good understanding of an offshore RIBsters' needs and requirements.

Concerning the design of the sponsons, the inflatable collar has been designed in such a way as to nestle if you like, within the protective shell of the GRP outer section. Made from Pennel Flippo Hypalon neoprene 1200 Dtex, the collar is divided into 4 compartments which can be removed for inspection or repair through the access points provided on the outer GRP skin. According to the customers requirements, the internal inflatable collar can vary in terms of length so as to accommodate additional storage space if so required in the very part of the boat that would normally be taken up by air filled tube in any conventional RIB. Oh yes, whilst speaking of storage, this boat's got plenty of it throughout.

Below decks, the hull itself is made full use of, with its internal capacity used to accommodate either 330 litres of fuel and 150 litres of fresh water, or simply a total of 480 litres of fuel if the customer so desires. This makes not only for a wise use of otherwise wasted space, but also helps to ensure a low central point of gravity, another important factor in terms of good handling and performance.

Indeed, overall I would sum her up as being a very fine example of a class of RIB we shall no doubt see cruising our waters on an ever increasing scale. An exciting direction for any RIB builder to take, but not one that perhaps all will achieve to the same standard as is evident in the Apache 22. Maybe my lack of criticism means I'm too kind, on the other hand I may just be right? Whether she be beauty or beast, time more than anything will tell!
