| This is good example of a RIB equally suited to offshore use by the commercial operator and the more serious private user alike. Possessing a true deep-vee hull of exceptionally soft riding character, this model is at home tracking across the Channel or around the Isles of Scotland as it is performing the functions of a family runabout or even the duties of a professional patrol craft. For good reason then it seems, this uncomplicated and functional RIB is, according to its makers, their best selling craft. Like our other RIB profile inclusion this month, the success of the Ribcraft 5.85 undoubtedly lies in the fact it remains easy to tow with just a single axle trailer. In terms of size I suppose it might be described in simplistic terms as being just big enough but not too big. There is a lot of fun to be had in a smaller RIB. Plus of course a small RIB does not need huge amounts of horsepower, which has got to be great news in terms of fuelling costs. Mind you, whilst one could probably get away with as little as 90hp, this little number will actually take 150hp - if you so desire. Coupled to this latter amount of power you could expect to be clocked at speeds well in excess of 50 mph. However, the Yamaha 100hp 4-stroke and the Mariner 90hp 4-stroke engines in fact, continue to be this model’s most popular engine installation. Either of these engines will give the boat an average speed of 37 knots with a payload of 4 persons and 20 gallons of fuel. The approximate range with this configuration totals 80 miles, or if utilising the boat’s 40 gallon under-deck s/s tank to the full, an impressive 160 miles. The boat therefore, is capable in its standard format, of possessing a very useful cruising range. In its most common form, the 5.85m offers a straightforward seating layout consisting of well made expedition styled jockey seats. An optional rear bench seat affords further locker space if required. That said, a brand new front console seat and rear bench seat have been designed for release at London Boat Show. Dry stowage is relatively limited to the main console and bench seat (if the latter is ordered.) No real fancy leisure market niceties on this boat but the quality of finish and strength of build is ‘tip top’. Coupled to its handling characteristics, the design of this MCA type approved 5.85 RIB is set to appeal to the sea going type of Ribster. This particular model has been in production now for some 14 years, and though it is the only model within this size range, it can be customised extensively according to the clients requirements. Ribcraft do not have a dealer network so all orders must be placed direct with the company itself. Delivery times are currently running at 8-10 weeks. A well proven RIB with rough water capability, high payload tolerance and functional seaman like fitout. HMS |
